How does 1984 changed my view of life and society?

1984 is a straight forward book, a book where disagreement is everywhere, where a society is as flawless that it became dysfunctional. We read about how a telegraph records people and thought is a crime, and people are so repressed that they grow up being minimalist. Winston, the main character of the book talks and talks about how he is against the government system in Oceania, he gives details that make the reader even uncomfortable by knowing how this people lived. Winston also tells us how the place was liveable and nice but now it is a massive destruction place, where things are on the verge being completely in the state of disorder and mess.

My point here is, that after I got to read this book I have a different perspective on my society, my country, and my world. I  see the society I live on as a really conflictive place, a place where issues happen daily, accidents, addictions, and people are okay living like this. We live in a society where you can turn on the TV and see how a kid got raped and murdered, or how the Amazonian forest is on fire. You can open Instagram and see how people post their lives and say things that other people later “meme” and make fun of. A self consuming society, that will end up destructing itself.

My opinion or point of view of this society will remain the same, I think we do live in a world of materialist people, where we treat objects like people and people like objects, where issues and people’s self-esteems revolve around materialistic things or social media, and their happiness depends on so little, insignificant details, that we lost the meaning of life, and true happiness, we don’t see the bigger picture.

However, after I read the book, I think it is important in a country or society to have freedom of thought, to say what we want to say, but with a sense of humanity, I think it is a mixture of both things that will make this world a better place. In other words, it is a perfect balance of expressing ourselves without being rude or offending anyone. Also there should be laws and rules, but letting people do or work in what they want and earn their money, not being repressed.

We should reflect on our actions, and really think that, after all, a perfect society isn’t based on rules and government, a truly perfect world begins with each and everyone of us within the inside.
